First, we’ll discuss the types of manuscripts we’re looking for, including preferred genres, themes, and what makes a story a strong fit. Then, we’ll walk through the submission and query process, breaking down what agents and editors expect at each step. Finally, we’ll provide practical tips for writers to prepare their manuscript for submission, from formatting and polishing to crafting a compelling query letter.
Attendees will leave with a clear roadmap for submitting their work, insights into common pitfalls to avoid, and actionable strategies to increase their chances of success. Whether you’re a first-time author or an experienced writer looking to refine your approach, this session will help you take the next step toward publication with confidence.
Editor Bio: Heidi Gordon is the Publishing Director for Shadow Mountain where she oversees acquisition for all genres. She’s been with Shadow Mountain now for twenty years and is the creative mind behind the popular Proper Romance brand that recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary. Heidi graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Forensic Anthropology and Creative Writing which only fed her addiction to her favorite genre – horror/suspense. (Of course, her favorite author is Stephen King). She loves to meet and talk with aspiring authors - and find those un-cut diamonds in the slush pile. She is currently looking for Middle-grade, Young Adult, Romance, General fiction, nonfiction and cookbooks.
